For this course outcome, I chose two artifacts that best demonstrate the variance across different settings based on genre or the method of communication used.
This outcome is represented by the battery of a car because it can be used in different ways and scenarios, just like variation in rhetorical and linguistic patterns across different contexts.
The first artifact is the Major Assignment 2, where the task was to choose two pieces of my own writing and analyze them across multiple contexts. I chose to analyze a supplementary question from my college application and an email I sent to my landlord. I analyzed each one of them in their own context and more to see what the author had used to reach their goal in doing the writing. While doing this assignment, I learned the true meaning of rhetorical and linguistic patterns and how they are used in order to gain or convince something from the reader.
The second artifact for this outcome is a discussion post called navigating genres. Before this assignment I had never looked deeply into genres and how important they are. This artifact directly ties to variation across contexts, because this outcome is analyzing and reflecting on various rhetorical patterns and genre is a type of rhetorical pattern. "The rhetorical situation determines the genre of the situation". Genre is an essential part of every piece of literature. "Understanding the genre around you get you further in life".
